Abstract
977,091. Liquefied gas fuelled lighters. MERIDIAN PRODUCTS (BERMUDA) Ltd. Aug. 7, 1962 [Aug. 17, 1961], No. 30275/62. Heading F4F. A cigarette lighter using liquefied gas comprises a transparent moulded plastic body 23 having a fuel chamber 21, a manually-operated valve 39 adapted to close the discharge end of a passageway 27 in the body and a choke 30 controlling the flow of fuel to the passage. The choke comprises a disc of rubber having a thread 31 extending therethrough. The fuel is fed to the underside of the choke 30 by a polythene tube 32 extending to the bottom of the fuel chamber. The valve 39 comprises an insert 33 having a flexible diaphragm 34 which seats on a raised boss 29 at the outlet of the passageway 27 and which has openings 36 for the fuel. The valve 39 is rotatable and slidable within a well 26 in the body and has a cylindrical stem portion adapted to fit into the insert 33 and abut the diaphragm 34. Rotation of an operating lever 54 integral with the valve 39 from a position at the front of the lighter to a position at the side of the lighter causes the diaphragm 34 to close the passageway 27 through cam surfaces 46, 47 on the valve 39 coacting with cam surfaces 50 on a coverpiece 57 and cam surfaces on the body 23. The lever 54 extends through an arcuate slot 53 formed between the upper surface of the body 23 and the lower surface of the coverpiece 57. The cover-piece is secured to the body by a pin 61 and a pin 60 which also forms the spindle of a flint wheel 59. A flint 64 and its spring 65 are located in aligned openings 62, 63 in the cover 57 and the body 23. A fuel loading passageway 66 in the body 23 is closed by a resilient sealing plug 68 urged by a spring 69. A slot 70 extending along one wall of the passageway permits fuel to be admitted. Alternatively, the fuel may be admitted under refrigeration before the bottom of the body 23 is inserted. The bottom is joined to the body by a suitable solvent or cement and the mating surfaces are N-shaped to provide a large contacting surface (Fig. 1, not shown).
