Abstract
812,136. Fluid-actuated valves. WILKERSON CORPORATION. June 3, 1955 [March 30, 1955], No. 16041/55. Class 135. A drain valve has a body 5 with an attaching portion 15 for connection into an enclosed space, an axial bore 6 extending from the top to the bottom where it forms a discharge passage 6a, a valve 10 controlling the discharge passage at the seat 11 and carried by a movable wall, e.g. a piston 9, a drain port 18 in a wall of the bore between the attaching portion and the top of the body, a spring 13 biasing the movable wall to an upper limit above port 18, the upper face of the wall being responsive to pressure in the enclosed space in excess of the spring force for moving the wall and valve to a downward limit to close the discharge passage. The piston has an 0 sealing ring 14 sliding in the bore and closing port 18 in its lowest position. A strainer 17 is fixed to the body and limits the upward movement of the piston. Normally compressed air keeps the valve end closed, but at low pressure the valve opens and drains the container. In another embodiment the plug 25 is removed and an axial passage through the valve 10 for preliminary draining is controlled by a manually-operated cock having its operating stem protruding through passage 6a. In a further embodiment the body 5 screws into a container connected to a drain conduit, a spring in the container holding the strainer in position.
