Abstract
663,416. Valves. DAHL, G. W. April 16, 1949 [April 17, 1948], No. 10252/49. Class 135. A diaphragm-actuated valve having a stem connecting the diaphragm to the valve closure member and surrounded by a sleeve movable manually between fixed abutments secured to the stem so that the permissible movement of the closure member in both opening and closing directions may be limited, comprises a valve body 10, Fig. 1, having an inlet 11 and an outlet 12 and housing a closure member 17 connected by a stem 25 to a diaphragm 27 mounted in a chamber 56 which may be supplied with compressed air through an opening 56a. The stem 25 has secured thereto an upper abutment button 26 supporting the diaphragm 27 and lower abutment nuts 85, 87, and is surrounded by a sleeve 70 having external screw-threads 73 engageable with threads in the hub of a worm wheel 77 secured against axial movement by a block 50 interposed between tubes 45, 52 connecting the body 10 to the chamber 56. The worm wheel 77 is engageable with a worm 78 rotatable by a handwheel 84 and disposable in either of one of two bores 82 in the block 50. Loading springs 64, 65 between the button 26 and an adjustable spring abutment 63 oppose the air pressure on the diaphragm whilst pointers 92, 95 secured to the stem 25 and coacting with scales 93, 98, Fig. 2, indicate the position of the sleeve and the closure member respectively. In the neutral position, Figs. 1 and 2, the valve may be fully opened by the springs 64, 65 or fully closed by the air pressure acting on the diaphragm 27. To adjust the valve so that it may never be fully closed the downward movement of the button 26 is limited on the upward movement of the sleeve 70 by rotation of the handwheel 84. To adjust the valve so that it may never be fully opened the sleeve 70 is moved downwards together with the nuts 85, 87 and the stem 25. The valve closure member 17 and its seat 15 may be modified, see Fig. 5, so that the seat is located above instead of below the valve member. In this case the alternative bore in the block 50 is used for the worm 78 so that the same direction of rotation of the handwheel 84 has the same limiting effects as before on the closure member.
