Abstract

753,854. Valves. OTIS ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Jan. 25, 1954, No. 2209/54. Class 135. In a valve for relieving pressure in a container 2, Fig. 1, having a loose ball valve 11 urged towards its seat by a spring 20 acting on a loosely - mounted plunger 15, the seat is formed of removable telescopic parts 5, 6, Fig. 2, forming an annular chamber 9 having an opening in the seating surface. The chamber 9 houses a resilient sealing ring 10 urged against the ball when the valve is closed by fluid pressure transmitted through passages 13 connected to a reduced diameter portion 12 of the valve flow passage 4. On the opening of the valve pressure fluid in the chamber 9 tends to exhaust through the passages 13 to reduce the pressure difference acting on opposite sides of the ring 10 and so prevent its extrusion through the seat opening. The plunger 15 is formed with a conical surface 15a which on the opening of the valve engages a pin 28 to rotate a shaft 29 to hold the spring 20 out of action until reset by hand. A spindle 26 passing through the spring abut-. ments is operable by a hand wheel to positively hold the ball on its seat. In a modification, the reduced diameter portion 12 is made in the form of a venturi, the passages 13 leading from its throat.
