Abstract

907,853. Valves. M.L. AVIATION CO. Ltd. Jan. 16, 1961 [Feb. 8, 1960], No. 4388/60. Class 135. A non-return valve includes a ball 10 which is forced towards a seating 6 by a spring assembly 11 and in operation is forced away from the seating by pressure of the flow being controlled, the spring assembly exerting a decreasing force on the ball as it leaves its seat. In the preferred embodiment, four springs 11 anchored in castellations 17 of a sleeve 14 present convex surfaces 12 to the ball so that as the latter moves away from its seat 6, which is of nylon, the axial component of the force of the springs will diminish. A seating 22 forming part of the sleeve 14 limits the movement of the ball to prevent the springs passing over the greatest diameter. Three springs 11, or one or two springs in conjunction with guide surfaces for the ball, may be used. In an alternative arrangement, a main coil spring bears on the face of the ball opposite to the seat while one or more transverse subsidiary springs act through balls on the opposite face of the closure ball.
