Abstract
583,550. Relief valves. VENNING, J. D. E. Aug. 10, 1944, No. 15289. [Class 135]. In a gas venting valve for liquid pipe lines having an axial bore constricted to form a seat 6, Fig. 1, for a ball 7 or other valve member normally held off the seat by the extended end 10 of a spring 9, a piston 14 engaging the ball 7 is formed with grooves 15, 16 to allow the passage of escaping gas. When the liquid reaches the piston the grooves offer such resistance to flow that the piston overcomes the spring pressure and pushes the ball on to its seat thus closing the valve. In a modification, the spring acts on the ball through a non-return valve 24, Fig. 4, seating on the construction, and a hollow ported piston 25 is used.
