769,540. Valve closure members. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Aug. 26, 1954 [Aug. 31, 1953], No. 24014/53. Class 135. A fluid - flow metering valve comprises a plunger 5 having a head 5a for engagement with an abutment ring 4, and a tapered shank 5b which co-operates with the ring 4 to provide a variable flow orifice and, in the closed position, engages a resilient packing ring 11 which is deformed so as to engage the tapered shank by axial adjustment of a nut 15 acting through a bush 14 and sleeve 13. The plunger has an extension 5c which passes through the bush 14 and is longitudinally grooved, as is also the head 5a, for the passage of fluid. The plunger is operated against a spring 7 by a rod accommodated in a bore 17 in the nut 15, additional fluid flow bores 18 being provided communicating with the bore 17 through radial grooves in the end of the bush 14. A washer 12 between the packing ring 11 and the ring 4 has radial grooves for admitting pressure fluid to the outer surface of the packing ring to balance the pressure on the inner surface. The seat ring 4 is sealed in the casing by soft solder 6.
