608,881. Relief valves. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and CHURN, C. R. Jan. 24, 1946, No. 2391. [Class 135] A hydraulic relief valve has a spring-loaded valve member 17 of which the end opposite to the valve face 19 is formed as a hollow stem 18 slidable in a balancing chamber 13 and of which the other end is formed with a hollow snout 22 constituting a continuation of the bore of the hollow stem and extending away from the low pressure region around the valve seat 15 so as to place the balancing chamber in communication with the highest availablepressure. High pressure from the inlet 11, Fig. 1, acts on the annular area of the valve face 19 outside the valve seat 15 against a spring 21 acting on a flange 20 with gaps 24. When the valve is open, the pressure in the outlet 12 passing through a passage 23 in the stem 18 acts in the balancing chamber 13 to aid the spring in closing the valve. In Fig. 3, the inlet and outlet are reversed and the area of the valve face within the valve seat is larger than the area of cross-section of the balancing chamber.
