Abstract
535,019. Valves. PYRENE CO., Ltd., and COATES, R. H. Sept. 15, 1939, No. 25948. [Class 135] A valve device particularly adapted for use in fire extinguishing systems in which carbon dioxide is the extinguishing medium has the valve member so shaped that the resultant fluid pressure tends to keep it off its seat in the open position and on its seat in the closed position. As shown in the Figure, the valve is actuated by a hand-lever 13 having an arm 14 engaging collars 15 on a stem 7 integral with the valve member. The valve face is formed on the end of a plunger 17 slidable through a packing 16, the closed chamber behind the valve member being connected to the discharge conduit by a passage 12 or external pipe connection so that in the open position of the valve fluid pressure acts on the back of the valve so reducing the force required to close it. The external diameter of the valve seat is made somewhat larger than that of the plunger so that when the valve is closed the inlet pressure tends to hold it in that position.
