Abstract

551,632. Valves. BLYTH, J. D. Aug. 27, 1941, No. 10953. [Class 135] A self-closing valve for use on pipe lines especially on aircraft to prevent loss of fluid in the event of the pipe line being damaged comprises a differential valve member having a larger area exposed to the pressure on the delivery side and a smaller area exposed to the pressure on the supply side whereby it is held open so long as the pressure on the delivery side is above a predetermined value. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the small diameter part 14 is slidable in a cylinder 11 and the large diameter part 13 is slidable in a cylinder 10. An axial passage 15 in the part 14 is connected by radial passages 16 on the part 13 to ports 17 on a closure surface 171 adapted to co-operate with a seat 12 formed by reducing the diameter of the part 10. The valve is normally held in the position shown by outlet pressure in the conduit 24 assisted, if desired, by a spring 19. In the event of an abnormal fall of outlet pressure inlet pressure on the smaller part closes the valve. The inlet may be fitted with a non-return valve 21 and a similar valve may be arranged on the remote end of the conduit 24. A similar self-closing valve may be arranged in the remote part of the conduit 24 to permit normal flow in both directions. A bye-pass fitted with a non- return valve may be arranged around either or both the self-closing valves.
