Abstract

916,339. Hydraulic shock absorbers. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. May 22, 1959 [May 22, 1958], No. 17605/59. Class 108(3). In a shock absorber having a gas-filled reservoir III, Fig. 1, within a hollow piston 1 a valve 4 controlling throttled flow to the reservoir is mounted in a sleeve 7 which is yieldable against a spring 9 and permits a limited initial amount of free travel without damping by the valve 4. The spring 9 is engaged between a snap ring 8 in the sleeve 7 and a perforated plate 10 and is preferably open-coiled with a gradually increased pitch. In a modification the sleeve 7, Fig. 2, is yieldable in two directions resisted by opposed springs 9, 27 bearing against a bridge 20 in the piston 1. The spring 27 acts on the snap ring 8 through a pin 22.
