Abstract
1484195 Hydraulic telescopic dampers ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 15 Aug 1974 [20 Aug 1973] 35967/74 Heading F2S A vehicle damper provides a greater resistance to compression and rebound movements when the vehicle is heavily loaded (i.e. when the damper is contracted) than when it is lightly loaded, and the resistances afforded in the heavy load condition are adjustable. Compression movements.-When the piston is above the position shown, compression movements are lightly damped, liquid in the chamber 6 below the piston flowing past a spring-biased valve element 14 to the reservoir 10 as well as through the piston to the chamber 5. When the piston is below the position shown, it closes off access to the valve element 14 and compression movements are more heavily damped, liquid flowing through the piston to chamber 5 and thence to the reservoir 10 via a valve element 8 whose spring bias is greater than that of the valve element 14, and adjustable. Rebound movements.-When the piston is below the position shown, rebound movements are heavily damped because passage 22 is covered by the piston and liquid can flow from the chamber 5 only via the heavily biased adjustable valve element 8 to the reservoir 10. When the piston is above the position shown, the passage 22 is uncovered and rebound movements are only lightly damped, liquid in chamber 5 flowing to chamber 6 past a valve element 21 whose spring bias is less than that of valve element 8. The chamber 6 is replenished by liquid flowing from the reservoir past valve element 19. Other details.-The piston is tapered to provide a gradual transition between light and heavy damping for both compression and rebound movements. Each of the damping valve elements 8, 14 and 21 have a permanently open path in parallel with them. Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) are diagrammatic representations of dampers. Fig. 2 is similar to Fig. 3 with three damping valve elements 8, 14, 21 and two non-return valve elements 12 and 19, but the valve element 12 is in an external by-pass rather than in the piston. Fig. 1 has four damping valve elements 8, 14, 17, 21 and two non-return valve elements 12 and 19, the adjustable valve element 8 being used only for rebound movements and the adjustable valve element 17 being used for compression movements.
