836,870. Valves. BENDIX-WESTING- HOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Aug. 14, 1958 [Oct. 17, 1957], No. 26201/58. Class 135. A fluid pressure control device comprises a body 10 with inlet, outlet and vent ports 12, 14, 44, and a movable member 20 formed with first and second motive surfaces, and operable in conjunction with a valve 46 to open or close a port 38 in the movable member and an exhaust port 40 at the lower end of a fixed axial member 39, to control the connection of outlet port 14 with either inlet port 12 or vent port 44. The device may be applied to a tractor braking system such as described in Specification 683,350, port 12 being in communication with a pressure fluid reservoir and port 14 with the tractor protection valve. As shown the movable member consists of a stepped piston 20, 22 of which the lower end surface forms the first motive surface and the annular surface 30 the second motive surface. In the first position shown a loading spring 35 holds valve 46 and piston 20 in contact to maintain poit 38 closed, whereby outlet 14 communicates via a control chamber 18 containing the enlarged piston portion 22, a passage 41 and orifice 40, with vent port 44. Upon admitting pressure fluid from inlet 12, valve 46 and piston 20 rise together until valve 46 engages the lower end of member 39 and closes exhaust orifice 40, whereupon continued movement of the piston opens port 38 enabling the piessure fluid to act upon the annular surface 30, resulting in a snap action upward movement of the piston into its second position in contact with a cap member 32, and also placing ports 12, 14 in communication. Upon reduction of the supply pressure the operation is reversed, closure of port 38 being followed by opening of orifice 40, so placing the fluid acting on surface 30 into communication with vent port 44 and enabling spring 35 to snap piston 20 downwards, thereby cutting off inlet port 12 and restoring communication between ports 12, 44. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the motive surfaces are provided by diaphragms connected to the movable member.
