Abstract
1307087 Valves BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc 31 March 1970 [8 April 1969] 36979/71 Heading F2V A valve assembly for use in automatic analysis (see Divisions B1-B2) comprises two identical independent valve units 103, 105 mounted on a common manifold 106. Valve unit 105 comprises manifold 106 as valve body, fluid recess 107 formed in the body, flexible diaphragm 109 extending over the recess, fluid inlet passage 100, 128 communicating with the recess, fluid outlet passage 130, 102 closed from the recess when valve poppet 125 is in valve seat on 135, housing 111 secured to body 106, a poppet guide comprising disc 117 and shaft 118 slidable in bore 114 in the housing with a centre portion of diaphragm 109 tightly sandwiched between poppet 125 and disc 117 and yieldably acting means in the housing, for example spring 120 retained between cap 115 and screw fitting 123 in poppet 125 for yieldably urging the poppet into engagement with valve seat 135 and a vacuum passage 126, 104 in the housing, whereby when vacuum is applied, poppet 125 is lifted off its seat by movement of the diaphragm against spring 120. In the assembly shown, reagent and diluent fluid inlet ports 100, 101 then communicate with the common outlet port 102. Valve seat 135 may be of polytetrafluoroethylene and the poppet of harder material such as polytrifluorochloroethylene. Initially seat 135 is flat; poppet 125 permanently deforms the valve seat to a configuration conforming with that of projection 137 on the poppet. Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) relate to different forms of valve poppet.
