Abstract

923,745. Valves. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Dec. 7, 1961 [Jan. 18, 1961], No. 2024/61. Class 135. A spool valve governor comprises a hollow body member 10 having a fluid pressure inlet connection 11, an outlet connection 12 and an atmosphere connection 25, a piston with sealing means 19, 20 movable from a position in which the outlet is connected to the atmosphere to one in which it is connected to the inlet, and resilient means biasing the piston towards the first-mentioned position. The inlet 11 may be connected to a reservoir supplied by a compressor until a predetermined pressure is reached when the piston moves upwardly causing the seal 19 to pass over a circumferential series of ports 14 and so isolate the outlet 12 from the atmosphere connection 25. Further upward movement of the piston causes the seal 20 to pass over a second similar series of ports 15 so that the main reservoir pressure becomes effective through the connection 12 to open a large valve in the compressor delivery or to hold the suction valves off their seats. Reservoir pressure also passes through the ports 14 to accelerate the movement of the piston by acting on a stepped portion of the latter. This stepped portion also ensures that the valve closes at a lower pressure than that at which it opens.
