Abstract

998,671. Spray-producers. 1. HONIG. Jan. 1, 1962 [June 6, 1961], No. 22/1962. Heading B2F. A compact piston-operated spray device which may easily be carried in a woman's purse, which may be repeatedly refilled and in which the spray fluid is entrained by an air stream from absorbent strips 32, comprises a fluid chamber 3, a movable non-return valve 25, a resilient cap 16, a pump cylinder 6 embodying a spray jet orifice 21 and a piston 8 slidable within the cylinder against a spring 9 through actuation of a closure member 11 which in the closed position of the device acts as a cover for the orifice 21. A lug portion 10 fixed to the member 11 is in operative association with the piston 8 through a felt disc 23 which together with a gasket 7 in the chamber 3, minimizes fluid leakage from the device. The valve 25 extends through a bore 24 in an end piece 5 of the cylinder 6 and, in the closed position of the device, the valve is held shut through the abutment thereof by the lower surface of a central portion 29 of the cap 16 which is pressed downwardly by the piston 8 acting on the spring 9. Such a position is maintained through the engagement of a peg 12 fixed to the cylinder 6 with a slot 13a formed in the lug portion 10. The cap 16 has a depending annular portion 15 diametrically apertured at 19 and 20. Bridging the space between the inner cylindrical wall of this portion 15 and the outer cylindrical wall of the portion 29 are two absorbent strips 32 held in position by ribs 33 extending radially from the portion 29. The portion 15 is spaced from the inner cylindrical wall of the cylinder 6 by an annular spacer flange 17 of the cap 16 which is orificed at 18. When required for use the member 11 is withdrawn to its outer limit prior to applying pressure thereto to force the piston 8 downwardly through the cylinder 6. Whilst the member 11 is withdrawn the device is tilted to allow fluid to soak the strips 32. The downwardly moving piston forces air from the cylinder 6 through the orifice 18 from whence it passes to the spray jet orifice 21 through a twin path flow around the outside of the cap portion 15 and through the apertures 19 and 20 via the strips 32.
