Abstract

759,170. Valve closure members. CLYDE CRANE & BOOTH, Ltd. Sept. 28, 1954 [Sept. 29, 1953], No. 26715/53. Class 135. An hydraulic valve is provided with back pressure chambers such that the closure member is held closed by fluid pressure irrespective of the direction in which the pressure acts. In one embodiment the closure member 23 coacts with a seating 8 in a ported sleeve 2 and has a hollow, upper extension to receive a plunger 21. An inlet 12 communicates through a port 11 with a chamber 5 from which pres-. sure fluid has access through passages 25, 26 to a chamber 24 in which the pressure acts to close the valve over a larger area than that acting in the chamber 5 on the conical part 9 of the closure member. Back pressure from the outlet 15, which is effective in a chamber 4, acts downwardly on the closure member on annular areas 27, 28 greater than the area of the conical part of the closure member which is subject to the pressure in the chamber 4. The closure member is loaded by a light closing spring 29 against which it is operated, e.g. mechanically, electrically or hydraulically, by a tappet 30. In a modification the plunger 21 is hollow and the upper end of the closure member slides in it.
