Abstract
937,495. Valves; hydraulic accumulators. J. MERCIER. Jan. 26, 1960 [Feb. 5, 1959], No. 2848/60. Classes 69 (2) and 135. A valve device, applicable to the liquid inletoutlet passage of an hydraulic accumulator wherein the valve member is normally maintained in open position and is moved to close the passage by the expansion thereagainst of an air-pressurized bladder 2 as the accumulator is emptied of liquid, comprises a poppet valve member 13, 14, slidably mounted by its stem 14 in a valve body 7 so that its head 13 cooperates with a valve seat 12 to open and close a port at one end of a valve passage 15, 17, 18, 23 in the body, wherein a duct 24 in the poppet valve member leads from an entry 27, which in closed position is adjacent the port and inside the passage, to a counterpressure chamber 19 in the valve body which is otherwise isolated from the valve passage and is bounded in part by a counterpressure surface on or connected to the valve member, the entry 27 being so orientated in relation to the flow as to transmit to the counterpressure surface a pressure which is greater than the hydrostatic pressure under the valve head when fluid flows through the port into the passage. A light spring 28 assists in maintaining the valve open. The duct 24 is closed at the head end by a riveted plate 25. In a modification, the area of the counterpressure surface is equal to the cross-section of the valve stem and fixed metering orifices are fitted at parallel passages 17 forming part of the valve passage. In another embodiment, an inlet-outlet connection 23 is replaced by an axially disposed connection, the chamber 19 being formed in a cup-shaped member spaced from the wall of the body 7. In further similar embodiments, a piston on the end of the valve stem has a restricted clearance with the wall of the chamber 19 so as to act as a dashpot either during the whole re-opening movement of the device or only toward the end of this re-opening movement. The entry 27 in these latter embodiments opens at the conical closure surface of the valve head 13.
