Abstract
836,459. Valves. QUALTER, HALL & CO. (SALES) Ltd. Sept. 2, 1958 [July 12, 1957], No. 22207/57. Class 135. A valve comprises a main closure member 4 controlling the flow of air from an inlet 2 to an outlet 3, which may be connected to a pneumatic ram, a by-pass 15 controlled by an adjustable valve 13 being provided between the inlet and outlet, the latter communicating via an axial passage 20 and ports 21 in the main valve stem 8 with the left-hand side of a piston 10 movable in a cylinder 9 against a loading spring 16 and having a lost-motion connection with an abutment 11 on the end of valve stem 8. In operation admission of air to inlet 2 first results in a restricted flow through by-pass 15, as determined by the setting of valve 13, into outlet 3 to take up any lostmotion or slack in the ram and its associated mechanism, after which pressure build-up occurs in the outlet until, at a predetermined value, piston 10 is moved against the force of spring 16 and a light loading-spring 6 to open main valve 4 and permit an unrestricted flow to the outlet and ram. The force exerted by spring 16 may be varied by a bolt 17, and the lift of valve 4 may be controlled by varying the extent to which cylinder 9 is screwed into the valve body 1.
