Abstract

977,381. Valves. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. March 29, 1961 [Dec. 29, 1959], No. 44098/59. Heading F2V. A flow control valve comprises a housing 1 having an inlet 2 and outlet 3 interconnected by a bore 4 containing an axially slidable plunger 10 constituting the valve obturating member and carrying at one end an element 11 provided with a metering aperture 12, one end of which opens in the housing and the other end of which communicates with both the inlet of the housing and an enclosed space 14, the plunger being urged towards the enclosed space and an open valve position by a spring 13 and towards a closed valve position when the pressure of the fluid in the enclosed space builds up above a certain value. The element 11 is in the form of a screw plug, the flange 12 of which limits the travel of the plunger 10. The space 14 communicates with the interior of the plunger via a restricted passage 21, passage 20, the latter being connected with radial ports 18 which communicate with the inlet 2 via an annular groove 19. In normal operation, pressurized fluid passes through the inlet 2, groove 19, ports 18, and metering aperture 12. Upon a surge in pressure above a certain value in the inlet 2, the piston is moved against the action of the spring 13 to thereby reduce flow through the valve. The element 11 is interchangeable with others having different bore sizes.
