Abstract

1,124,357. Hydraulic damping devices. SCHWEIZERISCHE WAGONS - UND AUFZUGEFABRIK A.G. 10 Dec., 1965 [16 Dec., 1964], No. 52474/65. Heading F2S. In an hydraulic damping device, e.g. for an automatic door closing device, the liquid flow through a piston 13 from one variable volume chamber 11 or 12 in a cylinder 10 to the other variable volume chamber 12 or 11 is controlled by a spring-loaded bobbin-shaped valve 23 which has end flanges 20, 22 which slidably engage the walls of a cavity 15 in a central body portion 13a in the piston 13, the flange 22 controlling the flow of liquid through radial passages 18 in the piston body portion 13a, and by a metering needle 26 which is fixed to the base of the cylinder 10 and co-operates with a central opening 21 in the flange 20 of the valve 23. As a piston-rod 14 moves out of the cylinder 10 against the action, e.g. of a door closing- spring, not shown, liquid flows from the upper chamber 11 to the lower chamber 12 through a set of radial passages 17 in the upper end of the piston 13, the metered opening 21 and into the hollow interior of the valve 23 from which it escapes through radial passages 24 in the valve 23 and through the radial passages 18 which are fully open, the valve 23 being urged downward to abut a bottom plate 16 of the valve 23 by the combined force of a loading spring 25 and the pressure differential developed across the opening 21. In this manner little resistance is offered by the damping device to an opening movement of the door. On a closing movement of the door, liquid flows in the reverse direction, the flow of liquid through the opening 21 becoming progressively smaller and the passages 18 being closed by the valve flange 22 by an amount corresponding to the degree of superiority of the lifting force, due to pressure differential across the opening 21, over the downward force of the spring 25, the lifting force being a function of the velocity of the piston 13. The piston 13 also carries a safety valve 28. The flange 22 may be located on the other side of the flange 20. A non-apertured flange 22 may be employed, in which case a tubular member, having an inner surface whose cross-section varies axially, is interposed between a smaller diameter-flange 20 and the wall of the cavity 15. The metering needle 26, which modifies the point of equilibrium between the force by the liquid on the flange 20 and opposing force of the spring 25, is replaced by one of constant diameter when a non-linear characteristic spring 25 is employed to modify the equilibrium point. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the chambers (11, 12) communicate through an external duct (18), a valve (22) in which is regulated according to the hydraulic lifting force on a disc (20), which works in a cavity (15), and the opposing force of a spring (25), a metering pin (26) which is associated with an opening (21) in the disc (20) being carried by the piston-rod (14) of the piston (13) which works in a cylinder (10) and which is fitted with a safety valve.
