Abstract

781,297. Valves. WILD & CO., Ltd., A. G. Aug. 3, 1955 [June 21, 1954], No. 18100/54. Class 135. In an automatic-hydraulic pressure-relief valve comprising a main closure-member 5 normally held on its seat by a spring 23 and hydraulic pressure acting in opposition to the pressure on a larger area, such as a piston 11, operatively associated with the closure member, a manually-operated device, for example a valve, is provided for assisting the hydraulic pressure acting on the larger area to open the closure member 5 when desired. The fluid in the inlet 2 both acts on the closure member 5, urging it on to its rubber or like seat 18, and flows through a bore 13, and ports 14, 15, the former of which is smaller than the latter, to act on each face of the piston 11 having a plunger 9 that abuts the stem 19a of the member 5, the pressure difference between the faces of the piston being proportional to the cross-section of the plunger 9, that is made slightly greater than that of the member 5, whereby the resultant force tending to lift the latter is small and a light spring 23 is normally sufficient to hold the member 5 on its seat. When the inlet and hence the resultant pressure increases and overcomes the spring 23 the valve 5 is opened and the fluid in the inlet 2 is then in direct communication with the outlet 3. The member 5 may be opened by actuating the manual valve that exhausts the space on the plunger side of the piston 11. A screwed cap 12 for the piston chamber may be provided to impart a thrust to the piston to open the member 5 upon manual rotation thereof. The valve chamber 4 may incorporate threaded bores for the reception of a non- return valve and a pressure gauge, not shown. In a modification, the plunger, one of the ports and the manual valve are dispensed with, the closure member being manually opened by rotating a cylinder having a cam surface which, through a spindle, imparts a thrust to the closure member.
