Abstract

627,281. Hydraulic tappets. SAMUELSON, B. M. F. Sept. 18, 1947, No. 25481. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A self-adjusting hydraulic engine-valve tappet has means for providing a controlled amount of lost-motion between the tappet and a valve stem actuated thereby so as to vary the amount of lift imparted whilst the engine is in operation. A tappet cylinder 1 with a closed end contacting the cam 2 has a plunger 3 contacting the valve stem 4 and loaded by a spring 9. Hydraulic fluid from a passage 7 and port 1a is trapped in the cylinder 1 between the plunger 3 and a ball-valve 8 for transmitting the cam lift to the valve. This fluid however can be controlled by means of an adjustable screwed sleeve 6 through a port 1b in the cylinder 1 to an outlet 10 so that lost-motion can be obtained between the tappet cylinder 1 and the plunger 3 until the port 1b is covered by the edge of sleeve 6. The amount of this lostmotion and the lift imparted to the valve is thus varied by the adjustment of sleeve 6 which may be actuated by hand or automatically by, for example, a governer.
