979,046. Valves. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 23, 1961 [March 2, 1960], No. 7366/60. Heading F2V. A pressure regulator comprises a fluid chamber 7 having inlet and outlet ports 5, 10, a reference pressure bellows 3 secured in the chamber, and a valve 9 to close the outlet port under the control of the bellows, the valve and bellows having equal effective areas subjected to fluid pressure whereby the sensitivity of the regulator is independent of changes in pressure at the inlet port after the valve 9 has been closed by the bellows. The bellows is provided with an internal spring 3D and guides 11 and is connected by a rod 8 to the valve 9 which is damped by a piston 15 in an oil-filled chamber 17. Adjustment of the controlled pressure is effected by a screw 1. If the port 5 is connected to a vacuum pump, pressure falls in the chamber 7 to expand the bellows 3 and close the valve 9; further pressure changes in the chamber now act equally on the valve and bellows so that the valve is lifted only when an increase in pressure occurs in the port 10. The upper surface of the valve 9 may be arranged to engage the seat.
