Abstract

589,549. Valves. DEHN, F. B. (Adel Precision Products Corporation). Feb. 14, 1944, No. 2709. [Class 135] A fluid-actuated valve comprises a casing with inlet and outlet ports 6, 7, respectively, a cage 9 provided with a seat for a main valve 19, a piston 21 reciprocable in the cage and connected to valve 19 by a tubular stem 20, a spring-pressed pilot valve 27 contained in the stem 20 and seating against the main valve, and a bleed port 40 which allows the inlet fluid to flow into, and build up pressure in, a chamber 41 above the piston. When a shaft 31 in the lower part of the casing is rotated, a cam 36 on the shaft, raises a push rod 32, and the upper end of the rod pushes open the pilot valve and allows the fluid in chamber 41 to flow to exhaust through the hollow stem of the main valve. This release of pressure on the upper surface of piston 21 allows the inlet pressure acting on the lower surface of the piston to push open the main valve. The main valve will be kept open by the actuating rod 32 when a shoulder 32" on the rod contacts the lower end of the valve, and as this will close the passage through the stem and the valve, an aperture 44 is provided to allow fluid to flow from the interior of the stem to exhaust. Bleed hole 40 may be situated in the piston. Cage 9 is adjustably screwed into the casing and is secured by a lock-nut 11, circular packing rings 16 housed in grooves in the cage sealing the joints between cage and casing. The pilot valve may be actuated manually or from an electric or other, prime mover.
