Abstract
565,538. Valves. GROVE, M. H., and GROVE, J. E., [trading as FLUID CONTROL ENGINEERING CO]. March 10, 1943, No. 3914. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1942. [Class 135] A valve device actuated by fluid pressure under the control of an auxiliary valve has a main closure comprising a tube of resilient material having its ends sealed to the casing about the passages and adapted to co-operate with a cylindrical barrier disposed within the tube between its ends and having a diameter greater than the diameter of the passages. As shown in the Fig., the resilient tube 13 at one end has an inturned flange 16, clamped between a shoulder 31 on the casing and a ring 29 connected with a barrier 17 by a series of bars adapted to prevent inward collapse of the tube. At the other end, the tube has an out turned flange 14 clamped against a shoulder 38 on the casing by a rib 39 on a detachable casing part 34 which part also presses on a ring 33 joined to the barrier by supporting bars 23. Around the tube the casing is formed with an annular actuating chamber 41 having a radial depth of from about 1/16 to 1/20 of the diameter of the barrier. This chamber is connected by pipes 42, 43 and control cock 52, with the main inlet 11. To limit the rate of valve operation, the entrance to the pipe 43 is restricted at 46 and the entrance to the pipe 42 is restricted at 42a, and a relief valve is fitted to the conduit 43 to discharge excess pressure to the atmosphere. In a modification (Fig. 11 not shown) the control cock is replaced by a manually operable piston valve working in a ported liner in the main casing. The casing section 34 may be replaced by an angle piece. In another form of angle valve, the barrier is held in position and the resilient tube clamped in place by a cage member integral with a removable cover plate. In still another form having inlet and outlet passages in line, the resilient tube is arranged at right angles to the line joining the inlet and outlet passages. When used as a pressure relieving valve, the control cock is replaced by a diaphragm-actuated spring-loaded lift valve.
