Abstract

639,073. Manually-actuated valves. HOPFINGER, K. B. Dec. 3, 1947, No. 31884. [Class 135] A tap or valve comprises a body member provided with axial bores leading in from both ends and radial ports leading from the inner ends of the bores to the outer surface of the body, and communication between the two sets of bores is controlled by a sleeve which surrounds the body and is provided with three seals in sliding engagement with the body, the seals being axially spaced by rigid spacing rings. In an embodiment, a pipe a, Fig. 2, carrying an outlet nozzle q at one end and screwed at the other end for connection to the water mains, is provided with a transverse partition b and ports e,f on opposite sides thereof. A sleeve g surrounding the tube carries rubber &c. sealing rings k and members p for spacing the sealing rings, and when the sleeve is slid along the tube from the position shown, it will allow intercommunication between the two sets of ports. Motion is imparted to the sleeve by a handle x which is pivoted to the nozzle at its lower end and is joined to the sleeve by links s. Radial vanes r in the nozzle ensure a smooth flow. In a further embodiment, the sleeve 10, Fig. 5, is stationary and is screwed at its upper end to a fitting 12 and, at its lower end, to the supply pipe. The pipe provided with the partition 17 and ports 18, 19 is then made slidable in the sleeve, and it is actuated by pushing on its upper end, which is formed as an outlet nozzle, so as to depress it against the action of a loading spring 15. According to the Provisional Specification, the liquid is aerated by means of a metal grid and a funnel provided in the delivery nozzle. The liquid, after passing the grid, enters the funnel and air can be drawn through apertures in the nozzle in alignment with the funnel.
