Abstract
710,532. Elastic valves. OLSEN, A. J. C. Feb. 17, 1953 [Feb. 19, 1952], No. 4379/52. Class 135 A valve for controlling the flow of fluid in a conduit, particularly air in fermentation processes comprises a rubber or other resilient tube 14 co-axially mounted inside a length of steel or other rigid pipe 13 forming a part of the conduit and sealed fluidtight at its ends to the pipe so that when the valve is fully open it offers substantially no obstruction to the flow of fluid through the pipe, pressure fluid being supplied to the space between the tube 14 and the pipe 13 to expand the tube inwardly through one or more ports. These ports are connected to small bore pipes 18 controlled by remote needle valves which can be manipulated to connect the space round the tube to a source of pressure or to atmosphere. The wall of the tube 14 increases gradually in thickness from the centre to the ends. In the fully open position, the outer wall of the tube lies substantially against the inner wall of the pipe 13. Flanges 15 on the tube are clamped between flanges 16 on the pipe 13 and flanges 17 on the adjacent sections 12 of the conduit. The pipe 13 may have several inlet and exhaust ports connected respectively to one inlet main and one exhaust main.
