Abstract

1,160,504. Valves in pipe connections. ALFRED WALETZKO APPARATEBAU 12 Jan., 1968 [14 Jan., 1967; 10 Nov., 1967], No. 1825/68. Heading F2G. A fluid flow control valve in a pipe connection between a supply pipe and an outlet pipe, particularly for use in apparatus where there is a danger that the supply fluid, e.g. water, may be contaminated by harmful materials introduced into the outlet pipe or apparatus which it supplies, comprises a pipe element 6 which is axially displaceable within an inlet chamber 4 so that it may be projected, as shown, against the action of a spring 17 whereby its forward end enters an opening in an outlet chamber 5, wherein it is sealed by a seal 22, to interconnect the two chambers, and which is also adapted to engage, by means of a conical face 10 at its upper end, a valve member 7 which is axially movable to a limited extent so as to close off the interior of the element 6 to fluid flow in all positions of the element 6 except its fully projected position. Displacement of the pipe element 6 is preferably effected automatically in accordance with inlet pressure, as shown, by forming a piston 12 integrally with the radial portion of the element 6 which provides the face 10 whereby, as inlet pressure increases the valve element 7 and piston move downwardly (as shown in Fig. 1) together until element 7 contacts a stop screw 8 on the end of a rod 9 on which it slides, after which the interior of the pipe element 6 is opened to permit fluid flow. A spring (not shown) may act on the valve element 7 to assist it in following movement of the piston. Alternatively, the pipe element 6 may be displaced manually or by an electromagnet. A non-return valve 35 is preferably provided in the outlet chamber 5. The piston 12 shown in Fig. 1 is without sealing rings to ensure free movement, liquid passing the piston being directed to a drain pipe 20 which is preferably arranged vertically (Fig. 2 not shown), the pipe element 6 thus being inclined. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, however, a diaphragm 31 is used with a cup-shaped piston 30 so that the inlet chamber is sealed, the operation otherwise being similar to that of Fig. 1 excepting that the valve element 7<SP>11</SP> is secured to a rod 9<SP>1</SP> which is slidable within a sleeve 39 between limit stops 39<SP>1</SP> and 39<SP>11</SP>. Also in this construction, a second inlet 33 is provided for adding a chemical to the liquid in the outlet chamber. Fig. 4 shows a further embodiment, similar to that of Fig. 1, excepting that the forward end of the pipe element 6 is guided by means of a plate 38 carrying pins (40, Fig. 5, not shown) which can enter bores in the casing of the outlet chamber, springs being disposed around these pins to perform the function of the spring 17 in Fig. 1.
