Abstract

556,610. Valve gear. BUCKLEY, A. B. March 9,1942, Nos. 3094 and 4059. [Class 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXIV] A valve tappet or the like with hydraulic means for taking up clearance comprises a piston portion 36, 38 operating in a cylinder portion 28, 30 so as to confine a body of liquid in the space 48 between them, the liquid being supplied to this space past a ball valve 60 and through a port 64 continuously open to an annular recess 66 between the part 30 and a surrounding guide 22, and the port 64 being supplied from a pressure line 78 fitted with a relief valve 114 affording a restricted escape of liquid adjustable by a screw 119. When the tappet is operated by its cam 34 to open the valve 42, the liquid leaks between the piston and cylinder to a space 70 which communicates with the recess 66, port 64, and valve 114 by a passage 68. A pressure chamber 98 containing air is fitted to the line 78 to absorb sudden changes, and oil or other liquid is supplied by a pump past a valve 106. Packing-rings 84, 86 prevent the entry of air to the tappet. For starting the engine, a valve 124 is lifted_ by means of a lever 130 and pusher 138, to admit additional liquid from a tank 120. The lever 130 may be connected by a spring 132 to the push-button of the starter motor. In a modification the tappet may be slightly inclined from the horizontal so that the ball valve 60 is closed by gravity, and a spring is arranged between the piston and cylinder portions of the tappet, to assist the liquid in separating them. In another form, Fig. 3, the liquid is supplied from the line 78 to the tappet past an arcuate leaf-spring valve 229, and the leakage collecting in the space 186 when the tappet is operated is brought intermittently into communication, with an outlet 240 controlled by a ball valve 244, the spring of which, is adjusted by a screw 248. In other forms the valve controlling the admission of liquid to the tappet, either of ball or leaf form, also serves to control the escape of the leakage between piston and cylinder. Specification 540,083 is referred to.
