Abstract
791,736. Pipe couplings. HIGH PRESSURE COMPONENTS, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1956 [March 17, 1955], No. 7846/55. Class 99(1). In a two-part coupling wherein one part 1 incorporates a spring-urged non-return valve 3 and the other part 14 carries a probe 16 for engaging and moving the valve off the seat 5 thereof, the part 14 is provided with an internal annular recess in which is housed an " O " ring 15 for making sealing engagement with the peripheral surface of the part 1. As shown, the coupling part 1 is formed with a conical seating 5, and an external annular groove 22, the valve 3 being axially movable on to the seating by a helical spring 7 encircling the valve stem 8 which is slidable in a ported bearing 9 secured in the part by a circlip 10 ; the conical head 4 of the valve has an annular groove in which is located a sealing ring 6, and the tapered probe 16 is provided with one or more passageways 17, e.g., an axial bore communicating with diametrical holes or slots. A rotatable cap 25 carries two strip springs 24 which project into diametrically-opposite recesses 23 formed in the part 14 and also into the groove 22 of the part 1 when the two parts are engaged ; the springs are located in position by arcuate-shaped retainers 26 secured to the cap. By rotation of the cap 25 through 90 degrees, Fig. 3, the springs are lifted by the part-circular portions of the part 14 intermediate the recesses 23 to allow withdrawal of the part 1 from the part 14. In a modification, the part 14 also incorporates a valve with which the probe is associated, and, to lock the two parts together, a spring clip is provided in the groove 22 of the part 1 for cooperation with an annular groove in the part 14.
