Abstract

756,608. Pipe couplings. SNAP-TITE, Inc. May 21, 1954 [Nov. 6, 1953], No. 15038/54. Class 99(1). In a quickly-detachable pipe coupling comprising male and female units 13, 12, the unit 12 has an annular valve seat 39 tapering inwardly from an enlarged bore portion 38 to an annular shoulder 40 normal to the axis of the bore 36, and a valve body 41 having a portion slidable within the bore 36 is provided with an enlarged head 44 located in the portion 38 and formed with a peripheral groove 42 for an elastic "O" ring 43 which, when the units are uncoupled, is pressed against the seat 39 and the shoulder 40 thereby being distorted into flattened sealing engagement therewith. As shown, the unit 13 comprises a head 14 having an internal screw-thread 15 for connection to a pipe, and a tubular nipple 16 provided with an annular rib 19<SP>1</SP> and a groove 18, the nipple being received in the tubular end 23 of the unit 12. The end 23 is formed with an annular series of radially, inwardly-tapering openings 27 for the reception of balls 28 which are pressed radially inwardly to engage in the groove 18 by a sleeve 29 slidably and rotatably mounted on the unit 12 and biased towards the locking position of the coupling by a spring 31 ; prior to coupling of the units the sleeve is withdrawn against the pressure of the spring 31 and the balls are pushed outwardly by the rib 19<SP>1</SP> as the nipple 16 is entered into the unit 12. The movement of the sleeve 29 to the locking position is limited by a ring 32 anchored in a groove at the end of the unit 12. The inner surface of the end 23 has a groove 34 accommodating a rubber gasket 37, U -shaped in cross-section, the tapered lips of that gasket forming, under fluid pressure, a seal between the units; also, a head 21 having an internal screw-thread 22 for connection to a pipe is provided on the unit 12. The valve 41 is automatically opened by the nipple 16 when the units are connected and has an axiallyprojecting stem 45 from which radiate a number of vanes 46 each of which is provided with a shoulder 47 for contact with the nipple 16. A projection 52 on the valve body receives a guide plate 60 operating in the bore 38, and the smaller coils 53 of a conical spring 54 for holding the valve body onto the seat 39 whereby the ring 43 is distorted as shown in Fig. 8 to form a fluidtight seal when the units 12, 13 are disconnected ; alternatively, the valve body Fig. 10 (not shown) comprises a single diametrically extending vane having opposite, inclined faces. In a modification, the unit 13 incorporates a valve similar to that in the unit 12, both valves being forced off their seats 39 by the coacting stems 45.
