Abstract

723,281. Pipe couplings. PRICE ASSOCIATES, Inc., R. K. Oct. 20, 1952. [Oct. 19, 1951] No. 26306/52. Class 99 (1). In a coupling of the kind in which balls 3, mounted in a coupler body 9, are movable to engage an annular groove 2 in a spigot member 1, Fig. 2 under the control of an axially movable sleeve 4, the balls, which normally project into the bore of the body, are initially moved in an axial direction in the slots 15 against the action of a spring 6 by a shoulder 24 of the spigot. The balls then move outwards into a recess 13, whence they are forced by the spring 6 into the groove 2 and back to their initial positions in the slots 15. In uncoupling, the sleeve 4 is moved against the action of a spring 5 to bring a recess 14 into register with the balls, whereby the spigot may be withdrawn. A gasket 8, which is adapted to be pressed against a slightly dished surface 17 on the body, serves as a seal for the spigot and also as a seat for a spring-loaded valve 7 which is opened by the spigot.
