Abstract

881,605. Pipe couplings. AEROQUIP A. G. Feb. 23, 1960 [April 8, 1959], No. 6347/60. Class 99(1). A coupling comprises first and second follow coupling members 10, 54 and means for locking the members in communicating relation, an adaptor 76 having a universal connection to the member 54 and serving to enable a conduit to be coupled to the member, and means operably connecting the adaptor with the locking means so that pivoting of the adaptor relatively to the member 54 will release the locking means. As shown, the part 10 includes a spring-loaded valve 24 normally biased on to a seat 22 and having air bleed holes 32 communicating with a passage 16, and a spring-loaded valve 42 provided with ports 40 and an air bleed passage to equalize the pressure on opposite sides of the valve. The part 54 comprises a body 56 into which is screwed the swivel adaptor 76 and mounting a valve 60 slidable on the body and having radial ports 66 adapted to be closed by a spring-biased sleeve 68, the latter sealingly engaging a conical surface on the valve. A member 92 secured to the body is formed with a number of circumferentially spaced holes 98 receiving balls 104 which are retracted into the holes by a spring-loaded ring 102. A locking sleeve 112 has affixed thereto a member 120 provided with a cam groove 122 for reception of the balls ; a nut 114 screwed into the sleeve has an opening 116 providing clearance for an actuator sleeve 82 formed with a cam ridge 88. A rubber shock absorber 128 on the sleeve 112 has a hinged dust cap 130 closing the end of the coupling member 54 when the latter is not in use. In coupling the members 10, 54 together, the members are axially moved into engagement so that the end of the ring 102 abuts the face 50 of the ridge 47 on the member 10 and the shoulder 74 contacts the valve retainer 38 and the ports 66 of the valve 60 are opened, the balls 104 then passing over the ridge 47 and moved radially inwards by the cam groove 122 and behind the ridge ; the surface 118 of the nut 114 is brought into contact with the ridge 88. The ports 40, 66 being fully open allows pressurized air to pass through the coupling to open the valve 24. Swivelling movement of the adaptor 76 due to a transverse pull thereon causes the ridge 88 to act as a lever on the surface 118 to withdraw the sleeve 112 and so that the balls 104 are forced outwardly from engagement with the ridge 47.
