Abstract

829,096. Pipe couplings. I. V. PRESSURE CONTROLLERS Ltd. March 29, 1956 [March 30, 1955], No. 9302/55. Class 99(1). A coupling device for a circuit comprising pressure fluid flow pipes and return flow pipes comprises a spigot member 42A, Fig. 2, engaging a socket member 1, Fig. 1, each member having coaxial passages for the pressure fluid and return flow, which passages are closed by valves when the members are disconnected and opened by the action of connection. The spigot 42A comprises a stationary thrust member 51, forming the pressure flow pipe, on which slides a valve 60 urged by a spring 55 on to a seat 65 to cut-off the return flow fluid entering at 70 and flowing through the annular passage around the member 51, the valve 60 also blocking ports 58 in member 51. The socket 1 comprises a thrust member 32 in which slides a piston valve 23 forming the pressure flow pipe and around which slides a valve 39 in the return flow passage urged on to a seat 36. When the member 42A is inserted into the socket 45 of the member 1 the thrust member 51 forces back the piston valve 23 (see lower part of Fig. 3) until the ports 58, 28, become interconnected by an annular space 33, permitting flow through the pressure fluid pipe, and the valves 60, 39, are forced off their seats 65, 36, by the thrust member 32 and the member 42A respectively, permitting return flow fluid entering at 70 to flow through the annular passage around the members 51, 32 and leave at 71. After a predetermined travel the member 39 contacts a step 1A on the body 1 and further movement of the member 42A to the right causes the body 1 to be moved against a spring 13 relative to a locking sleeve 16 having a conical portion 17 which forces spring loaded pins 9 inwards to engage behind a flange 50 on the spigot 42A and lock the spigot in position, the sleeve 16 being held in position by a clamp. Sealing rings 59, 37, in the valve 60 and member 32 prevent leakage of fluid from the pressure pipe to the return pipe. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the sealing rings are positioned in recesses in the parts 51, 23, and are acted upon by the pressure in the return flow passage. The inlet and outlet 70, 71, for the return flow fluid may be arranged coaxially with the pressure flow passage.
