Abstract

856,471. Pipe couplings. AEROQUIP CORPORATION. July 24, 1958 [July 31, 1957], No. 23897/58. Class 99(1). In a self-sealing coupling for assembly in a fluid conduit system and comprising axially alignable hollow body parts 34, 44 which are detachably connected to their opposed outer ends with relative axial movement to effect opening and closing of the coupling, the part 34 being provided at its outer end with annular sealing seats 62, 76 self-sealing valve assemblies 12, 18 are inserted as self-contained units in the parts 34, 44 through the inner ends thereof, the outer ends of the valve assemblies being adapted to abut each other upon connection and relative movement of the parts 34, 44 to effect relative movement between the components of the assemblies. The outer end of the valve assembly 12 is provided with an elastomer face 23 which forms a seal with the seat 62 in the part 34 when the parts 34, 44 are separated, whilst the valve assembly 18 is provided with an elastomer face 58 which sealingly engages the seat 76 in the part 34 where the parts 34, 44 are connected. Fluid connector adaptors 20 are screwed into the inner ends of the parts 34, 44 and are formed with retaining shoulders 72, 74 for location of the valve assemblies 18, 14 within the parts 44, 34. As shown, the valve assembly 12 comprises a spring-loaded valve 22 and a three-legged retainer 24 slidably mounted on the valve stem for engagement by the adaptor 20. The valve assembly 18 consists of a valve 50 having a similar retainer 54 riveted to the stem thereof, the latter having slidably mounted thereon a spring-loaded sleeve 52 which is provided with the elastomer face 58 which engages a flange 60 on the valve 50 when the coupling is disconnected. Coupling is effected by rotating a nut 42 on the part 44 to engage external threads 38 on the part 34 whereby the valve 50 displaces the valve 22 from the seat 76 and the nose 78 of the part 44 bears against a sealing ring 41 located in a groove in the part 34, whilst the spring 56 is compressed by the sleeve 52 the movement of which is arrested by the seat 62.
