Abstract

715,503. Pipe Couplings. FLIGHT REFUELLING, Ltd., and MACGREGOR, P. S. Feb. 27, 1953 [Feb. 29, 1952], No. 5383/52. Class 99 (1). In a spigot-and-socket coupling in which the spigot 10 has a coupling-actuated valve member 14 in the form of a spring-loaded sleeve slidable on a fixed sleeve 11, having a sealing ring 25, and adapted to be seated on a poppet 15, spring-loaded latching mechanism is provided whereby the valve is locked in the closed position when the coupling is disconnected. The latching mechanism comprises pins 21, slidably mounted in the arms 16 of a spider carrying the poppet 15, and a rod 18 having a tapered head 20 which under the action of a spring 19 moves the pins into an internal annular groove in the valve sleeve 14. The rod 18 projects from the poppet and is moved to release the pins when the poppet engages and opens the valve 26 in the socket 32, the loading spring 28 of the valve being stronger than the spring 19. The end ot the valve sleeve 14 seats on a sealing ring 27 in the socket, and the spigot is retained in the socket by spring-loaded latches 30 which engage an annular groove 12.
