Abstract
872,711. Pipe couplings. BRODEN, E. W. Nov. 19, 1959 [Dec. 4, 1958], No. 39279/59. Class 99(1). A coupling part 10 has a sleeve 24 into which is inserted a coupling part 12 provided with a peripheral groove 36 engaged by a number of balls 35 mounted within holes 34 formed in the sleeve, and a sleeve 11 located around and displaceable axially relatively to the sleeve 24 against the action of a spring 33 has a part thereof which co-operates with the balls when the coupling parts are engaged to hold the balls within the groove 36. A packing ring 301 located around a tubular part 2 lis resiliently urged against the inner end 37 of the part 12 and a packing ring 43 located around the end 37. When the coupling is engaged, the ring 43 being moved on dis-engagement of the coupling by the part 21 and ring 301 to a position which locks the balls in the radially outward position thereof. As shown, the part 10 includes a conical valve 19 having a stem 20 engaged by the part 12 to open the valve when the parts are coupled, and urged by a spring 16 on to a sealing ring 29 backed by a support ring 27 when the parts are uncoupled. The packing ring 43 has a conical inner surface corresponding to the tapered end 37 of the part 12 and, when the parts are to be uncoupled by axial displacement of the sleeve 11, is urged by the spring 28 acting on the member 21 to displace radially the balls 35 from the grove 36.
