Abstract
1,164,982. Pipe couplings. AMP Inc. 30 Jan., 1968 [2 Feb., 1967], No. 4656/68. Heading F2G. A quick release pipe coupling comprises male and female members 2 and 1 respectively securable to respective pipes (not shown), the female member including a tubular body 3, which contains a removable sealing assembly comprising axially spaced first and second sealing rings 24 and 26 respectively and which contains a valve 18 axially movable under fluid pressure into sealing engagement with the first sealing ring, and the male member including a tubular section 31 insertable into the tubular body to enter successively into sealing engagement with the second and first sealing rings and to hold the valve out of sealing engagement with the first sealing ring to establish a flow path through the coupling. The sealing rings are spaced by spacer rings 23 and 25 and the assembly retained in a counter bore 13 by an internally-flanged nut 27. The ring 23 has an internally-bevelled surface 23a which forms a stop for correspondingly chamfered edges 21 formed on the arms 19 of the cross-shaped stem of the valve. The end 36 of the male tubular section is reduced in diameter and provided with diametric opposed flow slots 37, the junction of the reduced end 36 and the tubular section proper being radiused to reduce wear on the sealing rings. The nut is provided with a pair of axially extending L-shaped lugs 30 which are adapted to co-operate bayonet fashion with lateral flange projections 32b on the male member when the latter is inserted into the female member and rotated relative thereto. The female member is provided with a bore 10 at one end adapted to receive a pipe end, the latter being clamped therein by a nut 15 having a tapered end 17 which is drawn up on a tapered flange 9 at said end of the female member. The male member is similarly provided with a counter bore 40 at one end to receive another pipe end, the latter being clamped by crimping. The pipe-receiving male member end is longitudinally fluted and provided with a sleeve 41 to facilitate crimping. A spring may be incorporated to assist fluid pressure to close the valve.
