Abstract

725,962. Rotary plug valves. GROVE REGULATOR CO. March 2, 1953, No. 5794/53. Class 135. In a rotary plug valve having at least two passages such as 11 opening into the bore 16 for the valve plug, resilient sealing rings 23 of circular cross-section are disposed between the plug 17 and the body 10 to surround each of the passages 11, these sealing rings being accommodated in recesses 26 formed partly by sleeve insert sections 29 interposed between the plug and the body and anchored to the latter to prevent rotation therein. In the through-way valve shown in Fig. 2, each recess 26 is formed by an annular member 27 loosely fitting a counterbore in the passage 11, and a ported semi-cylindrical sleeve section 29, Fig. 3, mounted in the bore 16 about the valve plug 17. The members 27 and the sleeve sections 29 have lips 33, 34 respectively to retain the sealing rings whilst allowing part of the rings to make sealing contact with the plug. The ends of the plug are sealed by further resilient rings 24 of circular cross-section. These surround the plug and are arranged between the ends of the sleeve sections 29 and annular members 37 retained in the valve body by snap-in lock rings 39. In another embodiment, the invention is shown applied to a four-way rotary cylindrical valve of the duplex type. In a further modification, Fig. 8, suitable for very high pressures, the recesses 67 formed between the annular members 69 and the sleeve insert sections 68 are enlarged as at 72 by an inclined surface 73 on the section 68 so that line pressure applied inside the sealing ring 66 forces the ring into the recess extension 72 and out of sealing contact with the plug. When, however, pressure is applied from the valve body to the outer periphery of the ring, sealing contact is maintained. The ends of the plug are sealed by rings 76 similar to the rings 24 and the plug is further mounted in ball bearing assemblies 78 held in place by abutment rings 79 retained by snap-in lock rings 81. To relieve pressure trapped in the plug passage 64, a spring-loaded relief valve 86 is provided which connects the passage 64 with the fluid line through passages 89, 91.
