Abstract

909,420. Valves. GODFREY & PARTNERS (HOLDINGS) Ltd., GEORGE. Feb. 4, 1959 [Feb. 5, 1958], No. 3709/58. Class 135. In a butterfly valve of the type wherein the pivot axis of the butterfly or disc is set at an angle to the plane thereof so that uninterrupted sealing is possible, sealing is effected by a number of gapped spring rings coaxially mounted one within the other and arranged in the bore of the valve body. As shown, two concentric spring sealing rings 14, 15 are located in a counterbore of the body 1 between a bottom ring 17 and an inserted sleeve 13 spaced from the ring 17 by a sleeve 16 and riveted to the body at 18. The inner spring ring 14, which seats the disc and is chamfered into the bore 2 of the body, may have a Z-shaped gap whilst the outer ring 15 preferably has a straight gap parallel to the axis of the ring. These gaps may be assembled in diametrically opposite relationship. The rings are slightly narrower than sleeve 16 and fluid pressure has access behind them through an annular space formed between interengaging spigots 19, 20 on the parts 14, 17 to urge the rings against the disc in closed position.
