Abstract

952,445. Valves. J. R. DEWIDELS. July 7, 1960 [April 7, 1959], No. 11665/59. Heading F2V. A tight closing butterfly valve for operating under high pressure fluid conditions, has an uninterrupted line of sealing contact between the butterfly and the valve body seating which line lies in a plane parallel to but offset from the rotary axis " X " of the valve, the butterfly or body seating having an annular groove 3 which is formed between a main part V of the butterfly or seating and a detachable annular rim V1 or anchoring ring and which, when the valve is closed, lies substantially in the plane of said line of sealing contact and which has a restricted peripheral opening, there being located in this groove a one-piece annular sealing ring 1 which is formed of resilient material and is reinforced by a metal or other relatively inelastic ring 2, whereby the sealing ring can be forced slightly out of the groove by the pressure of fluid gaining access behind the ring but the ring as a whole cannot be forced completely out of the groove owing to the restraining influence of the inelastic ring 2. In a modification, the ring closely fits the dovetail shaped groove shown.
