Abstract

697,113. Closure members. CULAUD, A., and ATELIERS DES CHARMILLES SCC. ANON. Jan. 10, 1951 [Feb. 17, 1950], No. 691/51. Class 135 The closure member of a butterfly valve rotatable on trunnions 13, Fig. 1, in a valve body 1, is fabricated as a braced structure comprising disc-like cheek plates 7, 10 spaced apart by bracing members 15. In modifications, the cheek plates may both be plane-faced or one or both may be curved outwardly, whilst the bracing members may be all perpendicularly disposed with respect to the cheek plates or all obliquely disposed with respect thereto. An annular groove 4, Fig. 2, in the valve body houses a resilient ring 5 which, when the valve is closed, is urged by pressure fluid from the upstream side of the valve into sealing engagement with the cheek plate 7. The ring may be mounted in a groove in the cheek plate. A second sealing ring may be mounted in the cheek plate 10 or in the body adjacent thereto, this ring then being used to normally seal the valve when closed. The first sealing ring in this case being used to seal the valve inlet during servicing of the second sealing ring.
