Abstract

856,676. Valves. WORCESTER VALVE CO. Inc. Aug. 25, 1958, No. 27163/58. Class 135. In a rotary spherical plug cock comprising a valve body 10, Fig. 1, having coaxial screwthreaded inlet and outlet passages 11 opening into a transverse cavity 13 housing a pair of seat rings 16 between which is mounted a partspherical plug 15 rotatable by a stem 25 to bring a flow passage 14 through the plug into and out of register with the passages 11, the seat ring adjacent the outlet passage is made of a soft compressible elastomer such as rubber having a conical plug engaging surface 44, Fig. 6, formed at its inner end with a projecting rim 42 and at its outer end with a projecting lip 40. In the fully open position of the cock the surface 44 and the rim 42 are compressed by the plug to form a fluid-tight seal with the front edge of the lip 40 engaging a rounded opening 50 of the flow passage 14. In the fully closed position of the cock the surface 44 is compressed and the lip 40 deformed as shown in Fig. 7. The rounded openings 50 of the plug flow passage 14 and rounded edges on the rim 42 and lip 40 prevent abrasion and tearing of the seat ring. In a cock in which flow takes place in either direction both seat rings are formed as shown.
