Abstract

923,413. Valves. JAMESBURY CORPORATION. March 4, 1960, No. 7849/60. Class 135. A rotary spherical plug cock comprises a casing 20 having a chamber with inlet and outlet ports, a ball 27 mounted in the chamber and provided with a passage 28, characterized by a sealing ring 25 mounted around one of the said ports and having a lip 25c free to bend in the axial direction of the ring, the ball being rotatable between an open position, in which the passage is centred on the ring and a closed position, the lip engaging the ball around the port when the ball is in the open position. The ring 25, which may be of rubber, nylon, tetrafluoroethylene, or stainless steel, is provided with a sloping face 25f so that when the valve is closed the pressure of the fluid forces the ball into sealing contact with the face. The lip 25c is so shaped that when the valve is open, it is preloaded into sealing contact as indicated in Fig. 5; a radius 25d is formed on the lip which co-operates with a similar radius 30a formed on the edge of the passage 28 in order to reduce the operating force on the valve. An identical sealing ring 26 may be mounted on the opposite side of the plug so that the direction of the flow through the valve may be reversed. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the sealing ring is provided with an additional lip 42 and a stiffening ring 45.
