Abstract
700,853. Valves. SAUNDERS VALVE CO., Ltd. May 15, 1951 [May 26, 1950], No. 13314/50. Class 135 A gate valve having a thin gate 5 with a bevelled edge has at least one rubber sealing ring 33 or 34 sealed to the valve body at 30 and sealing under pressure of springs 43 with a counter surface on the valve body or another similar sealing ring when the valve is open, partly with the counter surface and the gate when the valve is partly open and with the gate when the valve is closed, in order to seal off the operating mechanism 7, 8, 11 from the controlled fluid. The shaft 11 may be electric-motor or hand operated to turn the disc 8 cranked at 7 to the gate. The sealing is increased by fluid pressure acting behind diaphragms 27, 28 carrying the sealing rings and clamped in recesses in the body parts 1, 2 by spigots on the pipe line fittings 25, 26. If fluid leaks into the recess 4 or spaces 31, 32 and develops pressure due to heating, the pressure is relieved by fluid passing between the rings and the gate, or the ring and diaphragm may be separate but abutting members so that they can move apart against spring pressure and act as a thermal relief valve. In a modification a single diaphragm only on the upstream side of the gate, is coned and carries a hollow sealing ring reinforced by a metal ring.
