Abstract

880,835. Valves. BOVING & CO. Ltd. March 30, 1960 [April 10. 1959], No.12182/59. Class 135. Upon turning the offset shaft 10 of a butterfly valve 9 to the closed position the upstream pressure acts over the whole area of corrugated diaphragm 6 i.e. over both areas C, M and since area C is larger than area M a force is produced which deflects the diaphragm and rocks radial spokelike levers 11 clockwise about their fulcra 12 so urging the outer spherical surface of a stainless steel sealing ring 5 against the seat 3. The inner part of the diaphragm may be supported by pieces 15 forming radial extensions of the levers 11. To open the valve, upstream pressure is admitted behind the diaphragm by a by-pass valve, not shown, balancing the pressures on each side of the area C but since packing 21 delays the outward flow of fluid to the space behind the area M the pressure acting on the front side thereof rocks the levers 11 anticlockwise to move the ring 5 whereupon the valve may be opened by turning shaft 10. The fluid admitted behind the diaphragm may be other than the controlled fluid e.g. compressed air. The ring 5 may be spring-loaded. The levers 11 may be rocked through a common thrust ring moved axially by hydraulic pneumatic or mechanical means extending through the shaft 10. The diaphragm may be mounted by its outer periphery in the wall of the valve casing and the butterfly valve may have an interrupted sealing ring.
