Abstract

813,059. Valve accessories. SULZER FRERES S.A. May 17, 1956 [May 25, 1955], No. 15454/56. Class 135. The seating 4 for a single-beat lift valve is pressed against a packing ring 7 in the housing 1 by the pressure of the controlled fluid, e.g. steam at high temperature and pressure, and by the movable closure member, and is retained in position by one or more, preferably three, retaining devices disposed in bores 15 which are transverse, or have a substantial transverse component, relative to the axis of the valve rod which carries the closure member. The retaining devices are adjustable from outside the housing 1 and engage grooves 21 in oblique surfaces 20 corresponding in number to the number of retaining devices. As shown, a retaining device consists of a spindle 16 having screw-threaded engagement with a slide 18 formed with a nose 19 to engage a groove 21 in the seating 4. The spindle passes through a bored plug 23 and carries a flange 22 behind which a packing ring 24 is situated. The retaining devices may be arranged, as shown, to be subject to the pressure on the high-pressure side of the valve seating so that that pressure acts on the flange 22 to improve the sealing afforded by the packing 24. Alternatively, the retaining devices may engage the seating at a point below the packing ring 7 in which case they are not subject to the high pressure. In a further modification, the spindle 16 is replaced by a member with an internal screw-thread engaging an externally-threaded slide formed with the nose 19.
