Abstract
166,481. Metcalf, A. T., Lumb, W., Illingworth, W. H., and Bell, B. Nov. 5, 1920. Rotary spherical valves; seats; leakage, preventing.-A rotary spherical valve B, Fig. 1, is adapted to rotate against approximately knifeedged seats C, D, one of the seats C being resilientlv backed by a spring L in an annular recess M and having a conical bore N the smaller end of which is less than the bore E through the valve, whilst the bore E is less than the passages F, G in the casing. With this construction the scoring action of the fluid on the closure edges and surfaces is eliminated. The valve member B is supported adjustably on a screw stud H. The square end of the spindle S engages the valve, and a mushroom or like collar T engages a knifeedge seat U on the cover to prevent leakage. A plate 12, Fig. 5, may be secured to the valve member having a sliding fit in the valve casing. A spring plunger 1, Fig. 1, at the top of a pillar 2 engages one of several recesses 3 in the handwheel to hold the valve in its adjusted position. The valve may be actuated directly by the handwheel Z or through toothed gearing.
