Abstract

955,411. Valves. SAUNDERS VALVE CO. Ltd. May 12, 1960 [Feb. 25, 1959], No. 6539/59. Heading F2V. A fluid control valve has a flexible diaphragm 16 integral with a portion 22 co-operating with an annular seating 14, a supporting surface 17 extending inwardly from the clamped margin of the diaphragm, and an operating mechanism including a supporting member 24 extending substantially to the edge of the surface 17 so that the greater part of the area of the diaphragm is supported, the diaphragm being moulded to its shape in the closed position. The member 24 carries a screw 33 which is moulded into the diaphragm and may have holes through its head to improve the anchoring. A lug 29 engaging a groove in the bonnet 18 prevents the member and a screwed spindle 23 to which it is attached from rotating when a nut 27 is rotated by a hand wheel 28. A stem 37 on the spindle indicates the extent to which the valve is open and a pin 41 passing through one of a series of apertures 42 in the hand wheel may be secured by a padlock. The diaphragm may be of nitrile or butyl rubber or of a composition such as polytetrafluorethylene or polymonochlorotrifluorethylene based on halogenated hydrocarbon. It may have a British Standard hardness of 90‹ to 95‹ and be formed with an edge or a narrow bevel to engage the seating. The valve body, which is machined from solid material may be lined with the material used for the diaphragm. A construction for valves of larger bore is described in which the body is constructed from castings, the spindle extends through the member 24 and the screw moulded into the diaphragm has a larger head. Specifications 321,892,362,084, 434,664,434,684, 439,701, 516,526, 585,607, 622,204, 657,324, 685,935, 693,845 and 744,071 are referred to.
